MEGABolt-PT Bar

The MEGABolt-PT Bar by Argentium is a prestressing steel bar system designed to efficiently apply prestress force across a wide range of structural applications. It features a continuous rolled-in thread-like deformation pattern along its entire length, allowing nuts, couplers, and anchorages to be threaded on at any point — eliminating the need for precision machined ends. It is used in both permanent and temporary applications in tunneling, bridge construction, rock anchoring, and soil stabilization.

The MEGABolt-PT Bar is available in six prestressing steel grades: PSB500, PSB670, PSB785, PSB830, PSB930, and PSB1080. These grades cover yield strengths ranging from ≥500 MPa up to ≥1080 MPa and tensile strengths up to ≥1230 MPa, making them suitable for light-duty to heavy-load structural applications.

The MEGABolt-PT Bar is available in nominal diameters of 15 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 36 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, and 63.5 mm. Nominal sectional areas range from 176 mm² (for 15 mm) up to 3,167 mm² (for 63.5 mm), with weights per metre scaling accordingly from 1.47 kg/m to 26.5 kg/m.

The MEGABolt-PT Bar is used in two broad categories of applications. For permanent structures, it is used in post-tensioned concrete, bridge deck linking, shear keys for seismic resilience, segment or girder connections, and pier reinforcement. For temporary structures, it is used to anchor temporary steel frame supports, as lifting bars in segment launching trusses, and for stitching bridge segments together during construction.

The MEGABolt-PT Bar system is designed for reuse. Argentium recommends limiting reuse to a maximum of 10 times, assuming each component starts in good condition and is properly maintained. However, the actual number of reuses should be evaluated and verified by the project engineer based on site conditions and the specific application involved.

Unlike conventional threaded bars that have threads only at machined ends, the MEGABolt-PT Bar has a continuous deformation pattern rolled along its entire length. This means couplers and anchorages can be positioned anywhere along the bar, not just at the ends. The wide-pitch thread design also enables faster installation and is better suited for temporary applications. The bar can also be cut to size on-site, and retensioning is possible without causing any damage to the system.
