Technological Features of MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchors System (SDA)

Technological Features of MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchor - Argentium

MEGABolt’s Self-Drilling anchor bar system comprises:

The hollow anchor features a hollow bore to allow for simultaneous drilling and grouting. The rod is made of a hollow steel tube with an outer round thread. The extension coupling features a patented design that enables direct transmission between each bar reducing losses. Bearing plates are forged steel plates with a
center hole. The hexagonal nuts are manufactured from high-precision steel with chamfered edges on both ends and tempered to meet the stringent demands of
anchor specifications.

The steel tube has the sacrificial drill bit at one end and the corresponding nut with a steel end plate. Our SDA are used in a way that a hollow steel bar (ROD) has a corresponding sacrificial drill bit on its top instead of a classic drill bit. The coupler guarantees a consistent grout cover around the hollow steel bar and that the bar remains in the center of the drilled hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchor Bolt (SDA)?

The MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchor Bolt (SDA) is an advanced ground reinforcement system that combines drilling, anchoring, and grouting into a single, streamlined operation. It is designed as a bolting solution for different ground conditions — including sand, gravel, silt, and clays — as well as soft to medium fractured rock formations. The system uses a hollow steel bar with a sacrificial drill bit, eliminating the need for pre-drilled boreholes.

What makes MEGABolt SDA different from traditional anchor bolts?

Unlike traditional anchoring methods that require pre-drilling a hole, inserting an anchor, and then grouting, SDAs integrate a sacrificial drill bit with a hollow anchor bar, performing all three operations simultaneously. The MEGABolt system from Argentium International takes this further by offering compatibility with most standard rock drilling equipment, making it easier to deploy on site without specialized machinery.

What are the main components of the MEGABolt SDA system?

Self-drilling anchors are composed of six key components: Hollow Anchor Rods / Hollow Threaded Bar, Sacrificial Drill Bits, Extension Couplings, Bearing Plates, Hexagonal Nuts, and Galvanized Anchors with Coupling Adapters. Each element plays a specific role in ensuring stability, adaptability, and load transfer across varying ground conditions.

What are the primary applications of MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchor Bolts?

The MEGABolt SDA system is suitable for simultaneous drilling and grouting in applications including tunneling and mining (radial bolting, ground consolidation and injection, spiling), as well as ground engineering applications such as soil nailing, face stabilization, slope stabilization, portal preparation, micro-injection piling, and temporary support anchoring.

Which ground conditions are MEGABolt SDA bolts suitable for?

MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchors are a bolting solution for different ground conditions including sand, gravel, silt, and clays, as well as soft to medium fractured rock formations. They are particularly beneficial in unstable or collapsing borehole situations where conventional drilling methods fail, as the sacrificial drill bit remains in place and the hollow rod serves both as drill string and permanent anchor.

How does the simultaneous drilling and grouting process work in MEGABolt SDA?

Hollow Anchor Rods are equipped with a hollow bore to facilitate flushing, which enables simultaneous drilling and grouting. As the drill bit advances through the ground, grout is injected through the hollow center of the bar, filling the annulus between the bar and the surrounding soil or rock, creating a strong bond and fully encapsulating the anchor in one continuous operation.

What sizes and variants does the MEGABolt SDA come in?

Self Drilling Anchors are available in variants of R25, R32, R38, R51, and T76, along with accessories including the Anchor Nut, Anchor Plate, Anchor Coupler, and Drilling Bits depending on the geological condition of the project site. MEGABolt drill bits are also available in different designs, diameters, and thread types to suit diverse geotechnical requirements.

Can MEGABolt SDA be used for both temporary and permanent support?

Yes. Self Drilling Anchors can be used for both temporary and permanent applications in mining, tunneling, and civil construction projects. For temporary use, they provide immediate stabilization during excavation. For permanent installations, they are grouted in place to deliver long-term structural support, often in conjunction with shotcrete or steel reinforcement.

How do MEGABolt SDA bolts improve safety on construction and mining sites?

By combining drilling, grouting, and anchoring functions within a single assembly, MEGABolt self drilling anchor systems significantly boost safety protocols in mining environments. Fewer manual tasks and shorter installation cycles reduce workers’ exposure to potentially dangerous mining environments, and the streamlined process lessens the need for personnel presence near unstable faces during critical phases.

What is a sacrificial drill bit in the MEGABolt SDA system, and why is it used?

A sacrificial drill bit is a single-use drill bit permanently fixed to the leading end of the hollow anchor rod. The MEGABolt SDA system is used in a way that the hollow steel bar (ROD) has a corresponding sacrificial drill bit on its top instead of a classic drill bit. Since the bit stays in the hole along with the anchor, there is no need to retract a separate drill string, this is the key advantage in unstable or collapsing ground where borehole integrity cannot be maintained.

Are MEGABolt SDA bolts compatible with standard drilling equipment?

The MEGABolt Self Drilling Anchor Bolt (SDA) system is compatible with most standard rock drilling equipment. The thread types conform to international standards, making them easy to adapt to hydraulic rock drills and percussion drilling rigs already present on most tunneling, mining, and civil construction sites without requiring specialized machinery.

How does corrosion protection work in the MEGABolt SDA system?

Galvanized anchors play a vital role in self-drilling systems, enhancing corrosion resistance in challenging ground conditions. These anchors are coated with a protective layer of zinc through a hot-dip galvanization process, where steel components are immersed in molten zinc to form a durable barrier against corrosion, dramatically extending the lifespan of the anchors in aggressive environments. For highly demanding projects, double corrosion protection (DCP) with plastic sheathing or specialized grouting techniques can be specified.

How do I choose the right MEGABolt SDA bolt size for my project?

To determine load capacity, calculate the weight of the rock wedge the bolt must support and add a safety factor — usually looking at the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and Yield Strength of the SDA bolt to ensure it exceeds your calculated design load. A safety factor of at least 1.5 to 2.0 is typically recommended depending on project specifications. Argentium’s technical team can assist in selecting the correct rod diameter, thread type, and drill bit configuration based on your site’s specific geological report.

What is the MEGABolt GFRP Self Drilling Anchor, and how does it differ from the standard SDA?

The MEGABolt GFRP Self Drilling Anchor is used in mining, tunneling, and civil engineering widely. It is manufactured with high-quality GFRP material (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), has a high tensile load and bearing capacity, but its weight is only one quarter of a comparable metal product. The GFRP bolt can be cut freely due to all-threaded profiles at the job site. It is the preferred choice in applications where subsequent excavation through the anchor material is required, such as TBM tunneling.
